Here are our top tips to help make your first caravan adventure a success.

1. Don't Try to See Everything

One of the biggest mistakes new travellers make is trying to cover too many kilometres every day.

Instead of racing from destination to destination, plan shorter travel days—around 200 to 300 kilometres is often ideal. You'll arrive earlier, have time to set up camp, explore the local area and actually enjoy your holiday.

Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.

2. Learn Your Weights

Before heading off, make sure you understand:

• Tare Weight

• ATM

• GVM

• Tow Ball Weight

• Payload

Travelling overweight isn't just illegal—it can affect handling, braking and tyre safety.

If you're unsure, visit a public weighbridge before your trip.

3. Pack Less Than You Think

If you're travelling through towns every few days, there's no need to carry months of supplies.

Leave some cupboard space empty—you'll almost certainly collect souvenirs, local produce and other bits and pieces along the way.

4. Check Your Tyres

Before every travel day check:

• Tyre pressures

• Wheel nut tension (if recommended)

• Tread condition

• Any cuts or damage

Don't forget both the tow vehicle and caravan tyres—including the spare.

5. Take Your Time Setting Up

Take a few extra minutes to:

• Level the caravan

• Connect power safely

• Fill water if needed

• Check everything before relaxing

A calm setup usually means a much more enjoyable stay.

6. Travel With Plenty of Water

As a general guide:

• Fill your tanks whenever practical.

• Carry drinking water separately if travelling remotely.

• Never assume the next campground will have potable water.

7. Plan Your Fuel Stops

Before leaving each town:

• Know your range.

• Check opening hours.

• Don't rely on finding cheaper fuel later.

Sometimes peace of mind is worth more than saving a few dollars.

8. Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions

Most travellers are happy to share advice, lend a hand or answer questions.

No one expects you to know everything.

9. Have a Departure Routine

Doing things in the same order every time helps avoid costly mistakes.

10. Enjoy the Journey
